Bank of Tomichi & General Store Tomichi, Colorado
Ore was first discovered in the Tomichi district of Gunnison county in 1879. Tomichi could not support a full time bank because the population was not big enough, like most other small mining towns in the late 1800πs. The result of this situation often lead to banks doubling with other businesses, such as supply stores. The bank was forced to move to a different camp after the smelter burned to the ground only three years after it was built. In 1899, a landslide swept the town away in a flurry of snow and stones, destroying all of the machinery and taking several lives.
